British Construction Industry Awards 2024

The BCIA celebrates the best of the best across the construction and infrastructure industries, not just in what our industry achieves in terms of the projects we deliver, but the incredible vital impact we have on the health, wellbeing and prosperity of communities and the country as a whole. That is the context in which our judges debated and interrogated projects and initiatives that have had a lasting impact on society and they agreed entrants broke new boundaries and reached new heights that other professionals can aspire to and learn from.” Gavin Pearson, editor of New Civil Engineer.

Residential Project of the Year, this year’s winner was Marylebone Square and Bluebird was highly commended.

RIBA - Neave Brown Award

Hackney New Primary School and 333 Kingsland Road wins Neave Brown Award for Housing 2022

Given in honour of social housing pioneer, Neave Brown (1926-2018), the annual award recognises the UK’s best new affordable housing.

Located on London’s Kingsland Road, this hybrid scheme skilfully combines a community-led school with 68 apartments on a compact urban site. The deliberately dense housing block – which includes 68 rented homes, 50% of which are offered below market rates – frees up the maximum footprint for the school, whilst also providing a substantial baffle from noise and emissions from the neighbouring busy road.

The development is owned by an affordable housing charity which primarily focuses on housing key workers. 333 Kingsland Road operates a tenure blind arrangement, whereby 50% of apartments are available below the average market rent.

The 2022 Neave Brown Award for Housing jury was chaired by Partner at Pollard Thomas Edwards, Kaye Stout; Architect and Senior Development Manager at Meridian Water (Enfield Council), Yemí Aládérun; and Neave Brown family representative, Professor David Porter.

Brick by Brick

Housing for a better world competition

BxB.png

Brick by Brick in collaboration with Blueprint for All (previously known as The Stephen Lawerence Charitable Trust) ran a competition to find bold and thought provoking ideas to explore how housing design could change in support of a better world.

As well as wanting the best design for local communities, proposals were required to be feasible for local delivery. Practices were encouraged to focus on an outer London location such as Croydon and address the realities of delivering housing across multiple sites of varying scales, identifying efficient ways to deliver viable schemes. As well as taking into account organisational structures, such as planning and procurement, that steer the delivery of housing.
